Merckle GmbH has been active in the research, development, production, and marketing of pharmaceutical products since 1881. The company's production operations are among the largest in Europe. In addition to conventional chemical production, the biotechnological products manufactured by our subsidiary Merckle Biotec GmbH have been developed into a new pillar of support for the company's future. A new multi-product system for manufacturing recombinant proteins form animal cell cultures is currently being built at the company's site in Ulm. The corporate group has specialized in the biopharmaceutical and clinical development of biogeneric drugs since 2000.

Biotechnological approaches play an increasingly important role in the organization of in-house research and development activities. For many years, Merckle has been working intensively with affiliated partners from universities and the industry. In this context, Merckle supports fundamental research: Each year, the Merckle Research Award is presented at the University of Ulm. Under the auspices of the Merckle Foundation, a team led by Professor Rolf Brenner is currently researching the biochemistry of human joint and connective tissue diseases. In conjunction with university work groups, the company supports an intensive exchange of knowledge and opinions along with important joint efforts in the field of research.

In 2005, the former Merckle original product portfolio distribution operations were transferred to Merckle Recordati GmbH, a German subsidiary of the Italian pharmaceutical group, Recordati S.p.A. In addition to its new pillar of support in biotechnological generics, the corporate group has concentrated on expanding its internationally oriented generics business.
