What are Generics?

Generics are bioequivalent copies of branded drugs that have already been on the market for a number of years. They contain the same active ingredients and dosage form as the original drugs, but can be produced more cheaply because they use a known formulation.

Because they help to cut costs, generics are an important tool for governments and health insurance companies struggling with healthcare budgets. Indeed, generic pharmaceuticals often cost about half as much as the equivalent branded medicines.
